If you already have your Ethernet card installed you can skip to Configuring Microsoft WIndows 95/98.
These are general instructions that apply to most PCs. If you have questions refer to the manual that accompanied your PC for detailed instructions on installing boards in your computer.
WARNING:
The Ethernet card is installed
in a PC that operates with voltages that can be dangerous. Before you remove
the cover of your PC, you must observe the following steps to protect yourself
and prevent damage to the system's components.

2. Choose an empty expansion slot. There are two kinds of expansion slots in most computers, ISA and PCI. Make sure that you use the correct one.

If you purchased your card from
the Concord Computer Center then it should be placed in a PCI slot.
The PCI bus is shorter and light colored, the ISA bus slot is longer and
darker.

3. Unscrew the screw holding the expansion slot's backplate and remove it.
4. Remove the Ethernet card from its container.
5. Check the Card for any visible signs of damage.

Configuring Microsoft Windows95/98
This document describes how to set up Windows 95/98 for access to Concord's network. The Windows CD has all of the necessary software you need to use your connection.
Before following the instructions
in this document, make sure your Ethernet card has been totally installed
(see above) and your cable is plugged into the correct wall jack.
If you are already using your computer on the internet or with a provider
such as AOL using a modem, follow these instructions before continuing
to step 1.
Open "My Computer", the "Control Panel", and "Add/Remove
Programs".
On the resulting window, choose the tab "Windows Setup".
You'll see a box with a scroll bar containing a number of software
components. Select "Communications" with your mouse, and then click on
the button near the lower right labeled "Details". That will bring up another
window listing various types of communications software.
Make sure that there is NOT a check mark next to "Dial-Up Networking". Click on the little square box at the left to make the check mark disappear if it is there. Now click "OK" in that window. When you get back to the "Add/Remove Programs" window, make sure that there is a check mark next to "Communications". Then click "OK" in that window. (graphic on next page)
Ready to begin...
1. Open the Control Panel either from "My Computer" or from the "Start" menu under "Settings."
2. Double Click on the "Network" icon in the Control Panel.
3. A list of the Network Adapters, Network Protocols, and Network Clients you have installed on your system will be displayed. In the list should be the brand of Ethernet card installed in your computer. In this case the 3Com EtherLink III Bus-Master PCI Ethernet Adapter.
4. Remove all components except the reference to your network card by selecting the component to be removed and clicking on "Remove." Do not select "OK" yet.
5. Click on the "Add" button.
6. You will be prompted to select the network component type you wish to add. Select "Protocol" and press "Add" to continue. (graphic on next page)
7. Next, select the manufacturer (Microsoft) and the protocol (TCP/IP) that you want to add. You may be prompted to insert your Windows95/98 CD. When the file installation is complete, you will be returned to the "Network" item in the "Control Panel".
8. Select the TCP/IP protocol component from the list by clicking on it once, then press "Properties" to configure it for use.
9. There are several TCP/IP properties that can be configured. If your computer has been previously set up on a network (including the Internet) you may need to confirm that these settings are correct.
10. Select the "WINS Configuration" tab and change it to "Disable WINS Resolution."

11. Click on "OK" in the "TCP/IP
Properties" window when your settings are correct.
12. Click on "OK" again and restart
your computer when prompted.
Start Netscape, Internet Explorer
or your network application and enjoy!
If you are still having problems
with your installation you may call the Concord Computer Center at 5291
for assistance.
